Deep Dive: Schedule Line Categories & Available-to-Promise (ATP) in SAP SD

While the Item Category dictates what a line item does commercially, the Schedule Line Category governs when the goods can be delivered and how inventory is committed. In S/4HANA SD, this is closely tied to advanced Available-to-Promise (aATP).

Configuration & Two-Letter Codes

Configured under transaction VOV6, schedule line categories are identified by two-letter codes (e.g., CP for standard order with MRP, CN for no inventory check). Determination is configured in VOV5 using: Item Category + MRP Type (from Material Master).

  • Inventory Movement: Dictates the Movement Type (e.g., 601 for standard goods issue) passed during delivery posting.
  • Requirement Passing: Passes customer demand to Material Requirements Planning (MRP) so purchasing or production can react.
  • ATP Check Activation: Verifies physical stock, safety stock, and planned receipts before confirming order quantities.

Interview Question & Answer (Scenario Based)

Question: Why does an outbound delivery fail to post goods issue (PGI) with error ‘Movement Type not defined’?

Answer: This occurs when the underlying Schedule Line Category (e.g., CP) in the sales order is missing the assigned Goods Movement Type (e.g., 601) in transaction VOV6 configuration, preventing inventory deduction in MM/FI.

Communication Tip

When discussing stock shortages with clients, explain solutions rather than technical roadblocks: ‘Our system has verified that while immediate warehouse stock is committed, a manufacturing batch completes tomorrow, allowing partial shipment on Friday.’
